Ask ten people what makes someone Latino and you’ll get ten different answers. Some will point to a passport. Others to a last name, a flag, the Spanish that rolls off the tongue — or the Spanish that got lost somewhere between one generation and the next.
Here’s what we’ve learned in our years doing this: Latino isn’t a checkbox. It’s a way of moving through the world. It’s who raised you, what fed you, the rhythm your shoulders find when the right song comes on. That’s why we say it on everything we make — Latino by birth or Latino at heart. Because both are real. Both belong.
Latino by birth: the roots you didn’t choose
For a lot of us, it started before we had any say in it.
It’s the abuela who ran a whole household out of a kitchen the size of a closet. The dad who worked two jobs and still made it to the game. The sound of a language you understood before you could speak it. The flags that came out for every win, every holiday, every reason at all.
Being Latino by birth means you inherited something — a name, a story, a way of loving loud and feeding everyone who walks through the door. You didn’t earn it; it was handed to you. And whether you grew up in the homeland or three generations deep in a city far from it, that inheritance is yours to carry.
That’s the part people understand easily. The part that takes a little more heart is the other half.
Latino at heart: belonging you choose
From the beginning, we’ve welcomed people from every walk of life — those who live the culture, and those who love and celebrate it.
Maybe you married into a big, loud familia and learned what sobremesa really means — the way nobody leaves the table just because the food is gone. Maybe the culture found you through the music, the food, the fútbol, the friends who became family. Maybe you’re a few generations removed and you’re finding your way back, one dicho and one recipe at a time.
None of that makes you less. Culture isn’t a gate. It’s a table — and there’s always another chair. If you live it or love it, you’re part of it.
That’s not us being soft. It’s us being accurate. Latino culture has always grown by welcoming, blending, absorbing, remixing. Pretending it’s a closed club would be the least Latino thing we could do.
Raised by the culture, not just the label
The phrase we keep coming back to is raised by Latinos. Not born — raised.
Because the most powerful thing about this culture isn’t a category on a form. It’s what it teaches you. Resilience. Loyalty. The kind of pride that doesn’t need permission. The instinct to show up — for your people, for your block, for a stranger who reminds you of home.
And right now, a whole generation is leaning into that instead of away from it. Young Latinos aren’t watering themselves down to fit in anymore — studies show most identify as proudly bicultural and feel more connected to their heritage than they did even a year ago. They switch between two languages, two worlds, two playlists — and they refuse to apologize for any of it.
That’s the energy we design for. Not nostalgia. Not a costume. A living, breathing, present-tense pride you can wear out the door.
One voice, many stories
Here’s the thing about a culture this big: it was never one story.
It’s twenty-plus countries, a hundred accents, Afro-Latino and Indigenous and everything in between, the island and the mainland, the ones who never left and the ones who had to. Different hands, different cities, different roads.
And still — when the moment comes, it sounds like one thing. Una sola voz.
